OUR MISSION

The Museum’s mission is to Acquire, Educate, Document, Protect, Preserve, and Exhibit the unique history and culture of the Black Creeks (Freedmen) of the Indian Territory. Creek Freedmen were forcefully removed to Indian Territory (now known as Oklahoma) on the trail of tears in the 1830s from their eastern homelands in Alabama and Georgia.

ABOUT US

The Oklahoma Indian Territory Museum of Black Creek Freedmen History is an important institution dedicated to preserving and presenting the heritage of the Freedmen community. This museum is operated by the descendants of the Creek Freedmen, commonly referred to as Black Creeks, who were designated as Freedmen by the Dawes Commission in the late 1800s following a period marked by significant upheaval and forced relocation of Native American tribes.

The museum offers an array of exhibits that illustrate the historical experiences, cultural significance, and contributions of the Black Creek community. These exhibits include replicas of historical artifacts and documents that collectively provide visitors with a profound understanding of the Black Creeks' unique identity and ongoing challenges.

In addition to its permanent collection, the museum is committed to fostering education and engagement through various programs, workshops, and community events. These initiatives are designed to promote awareness and understanding of the Freedmen's experiences and to facilitate meaningful discussions about their rights and recognition within the larger context of Indigenous history in Oklahoma. The museum stands as a significant testament to the Black Creek community's enduring legacy and rich culture.
